This French grape was reintroduced in 1972 by Marqués de Riscal in Rueda in a different way. By allowing the grapes to have little contact with oxygen, a very fresh wine was suddenly made instead of the oxidative style that was previously common. Marqués de Riscal is the oldest winery in Rioja. The first wine cellar was built in 1858, and since then this winery has been a household name in the wine world due to the standard they set, for both Rioja and Rueda wines. They were the first to age Rioja wine in wooden barrels, which eventually gave the wines their distinctive style, now a benchmark for every Rioja wine. And in Rueda, it was Marqués de Riscal who discovered that you could make a beautiful fresh and fruity wine from the local Verdejo grape by avoiding as much oxygen as possible during winemaking, instead of the oxidative wines that had been made from this grape until then. All producers in Rueda have followed that example, resulting in a new wine style that is now extremely popular with all wine lovers.
