As soon as the Easter eggs appear again, we know it: spring is in the air. Those small, colorful chocolate eggs simply belong to Easter. But did you know they are more than just a treat with coffee or something to hide for the children?
The egg as a symbol of a new beginning.
The story of Easter eggs began long ago, even before chocolate existed. The egg already stood for new life and a fresh start. Not surprising then that the egg is central to a spring festival like Easter. Everything starts to grow again, the days grow longer, and you can almost taste that feeling of “a new beginning.”
The Easter hare and the egg hunt.
Later, the egg also found its place within the Easter celebration as we know it today. Eggs were boiled, decorated, and given as gifts. And then came the most fun part: hiding and searching for eggs. Especially in Germany and the Netherlands, this grew into a cheerful tradition, often with the help of the Easter hare.
And then... chocolate
In the 19th century, chocolatiers discovered that you could make perfect Easter eggs from chocolate. First large, then smaller and smaller. This is how the Easter eggs we know today came about: small, cheerfully wrapped, and filled with surprising flavors. Milk, dark, white, praline, caramel – each little egg is a small gift.
Perhaps that is the charm of Easter eggs. They are not complicated, but they make every moment just a little cozier. A bowl on the table, a handful from the cupboard, or hidden in the garden: Easter eggs always bring a smile.
