Liebfraumilch was incredibly popular in the 1980s. It became an official name for lightly sweet white wines from various regions of Germany. Originally, Liebfraumilch came from Rheinhessen, made from riesling grapes grown around the Liebfrauenkirche in Worms. Because it eventually became a kind of general term for a German lightly sweet wine, Worms changed the name of the true, original wine to Liebfrauenstift-Kirchstuck.
