The founder was a doctor, Dr Henry J. Lindeman. Just after graduating, he left London’s St. Bartholomew’s Hospital to travel through Europe. The Mediterranean life with olive oil and fine wines pleased him greatly, and he thought that the people around the Mediterranean Sea looked much healthier than his pale countrymen in London. In 1843, the adventurous doctor moved with his wife Eliza to Australia. In his rural practice, he was shocked by the poor health of the settlers. Wine, he thought, could have healing powers. That is why in 1843 he planted his first grapes in Cawarra in Hunter Valley, made wine from them, and prescribed it to his patients. What was once intended as a medicine is now a ‘means’ to enjoy.
