It all began in 1985 when a local boy from Chicago, chef Larry, perfected his family’s recipe for a sweet and spicy barbecue sauce and entered one of the country’s biggest cooking contests, the Mike Royko Rib-off. Larry named his sauce Sweet Baby Ray, which at the time was the nickname of his little brother. On the day of the cooking contest, Larry beat nearly 700 participants, a great achievement for an unknown chef. The rest is, as they say, history.
