Some smells and tastes take you back home in one bite. To Saturday evenings with the scent of fried rice in the kitchen. To a generous spoonful of satay sauce, a handful of fried onions, and that familiar crunch of seroendeng.
Do you live abroad now? No worries – with this simple recipe you can bring that real Dutch nasi experience back to your plate in a few minutes. Because you don’t just taste the Netherlands… you feel it too.
300 g cooked (preferably cooled) rice
1 packet nasi spice paste
2-3 tbsp ketjap manis
2 tbsp oil (sunflower or sesame oil)
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic (optional)
2 eggs
1 handful fried onions
2-3 tbsp seroendeng
100 ml satay sauce (ready-made or homemade)
Optional: pieces of chicken, ham or vegetarian strips
Fry the eggs as scrambled eggs or omelet and set aside.
Heat the oil in a wok or large pan. Sauté the onion (and garlic) until translucent.
Add the nasi spice paste and stir-fry briefly until fragrant.
Add the rice, fry well until everything is mixed.
Add the ketjap and stir. Then add the eggs as well.
Divide the nasi over plates and top with:
1 generous tablespoon seroendeng
1 tablespoon fried onions
A generous spoonful of warm satay sauce on the side
Prawn crackers
Atjar
Pickled cucumber
👉 Tip: This dish is ideal for using up leftover vegetables or meat.
👉 Extra nostalgia: Serve in aluminum trays with a little fork 😉
