Peter Yealands, the owner of Flaxbourne, has not always been a winemaker. He once started as a mussel farmer and set up sustainable aquaculture on the South Island of New Zealand. Afterwards, he started a reindeer farm there. His wish was to do something with the rugged Awatere foothills. As soon as he, together with his wife Vai, had the chance to buy this land, he devoted himself to sustainable viticulture. Everyone called Yealands crazy when he planted vines on that stormy tip of the South Island. 'Your grapes will be blown to pieces,' they warned, but Peter believed that thanks to the cool wind the grapes would develop even more fruity aromas and delicate, crisp acids. And he was right. All wines from Flaxbourne taste distinctly aromatic and crisply fresh.
