The founder was a doctor, Dr. Henry J. Lindeman. Shortly after graduating, he left London’s St. Bartholomew’s Hospital to travel through Europe. He enjoyed the Mediterranean life with olive oil and fine wines and thought that the people around the Mediterranean Sea looked much healthier than his pale countrymen in London. In 1843, the adventurous doctor moved with his wife Eliza to Australia. In his rural practice, he was shocked by the poor health of the settlers. Wine, he thought, could have healing powers. That is why in 1843 he planted his first grapes in Cawarra in Hunter Valley, made wine from them, and prescribed it to his patients. What was once intended as a medicine is now a ‘means’ to enjoy.
