The Extra from Westmalle may have a low alcohol content of 4.8%, but it is surprisingly full-bodied in flavor. This golden blonde Trappist beer has a very refreshing character. Trappist beer With its fruity notes and rich aromas, the Extra offers a taste experience that is truly Westmalle. True to our brewing philosophy, the Extra is brewed with the purest ingredients: selected barley varieties, a balanced blend of hop flowers, self-cultivated yeast, and pure water drawn from the deep Diestian layer. And just like our Dubbel and Tripel, it is a top-fermented beer, including the typical bottle fermentation. Did you know that the Extra is one of the oldest beers from Westmalle? More than that: it belongs to a long tradition as old as the brewery itself. Let’s go back in time to 1836. That year, the Trappists of Westmalle decided to brew their own beer. They needed a local drink to accompany their meals. In our region, it was only natural that this would be beer. All of this was fully in line with the monastic rules of Saint Benedict, which guide the way of life of the Trappists. The monks began brewing, which first resulted in a dark table beer. From writings, we know that some time later a white beer also appeared. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was mention of a blonde ‘Extra-Barley’ beer: a forerunner of the Extra. Throughout all this time, a lighter variant was always served at the monks’ own table. They gladly offered the Dubbel and Tripel to the outside world, but within the abbey walls they chose a modest quality that better suited their way of life.
