Westmalle Trappist extra

330 ml

With its fruity notes and rich aromas, the Extra represents a taste experience that is Westmalle through and through. True to our brewing philosophy, the Extra is brewed with the purest ingredients: selected barley varieties, a balanced mixture of hop flowers, home-grown yeast and pure water that comes from the deep Diestian layer. And just like our Dubbel and Tripel, it is a top-fermented beer, including the typical bottle fermentation. Did you know that the Extra is one of the oldest beers in Westmalle? What's more: it belongs to a long tradition that is as old as the brewery itself. Let's jump back in time, to 1836. That year the Trappists of Westmalle decided to brew their own beer. They needed their own local drink to accompany their meals. In our region it was only logical that it would become beer. All this completely in line with the monastic rules of Saint Benedict, which is the guideline for the way of life of the Trappists. So the monks started brewing, and that first resulted in a dark table beer. We know from writings that a wheat beer also appeared a while later. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a blond 'Extra-Gersten' beer: a predecessor of the Extra. In all that time, a lighter version was invariably on the table of the monks themselves. They gladly gave the Dubbel and Tripel to the outside world, but within the abbey walls they opted for sober quality that better suits their lifestyle.

    Usage

As a living beer, this Extra is still refermented in the bottle. So keep it upright and pour it carefully.
