    Frikandel - what is that?

Everyone in the Netherlands knows a frikandel, and for those of us from abroad, a frikandel is an elongated snack that is prepared in the deep fryer, although there are also air fryer and oven versions. A frikandel can contain different types of meat, so always check the ingredient list before buying a frikandel.

The frikandel originated in the 1950s, as a competitor to the German bockwurst and to have an easy-to-make, tasty deep-fried snack.

    Frikandel recipes

But how do you actually eat a frikandel? There are various recipes to prepare a frikandel. You can eat it on its own, with just a sauce, or you can put it in a bun. A frikandel in a bun is one of the most popular ways to eat it. A common recipe is the frikandel speciaal. You can eat a frikandel speciaal on its own or in a bun, but a frikandel speciaal always has onions and peanut sauce combined with curry/ketchup sauce.

A simpler variant is to make a frikandel mayo bun, for those who are not fans of onions or curry sauce.

    Buying frikandel abroad

Dutch snacks are so popular that in popular holiday destinations, where many Dutch people visit, snack bars have opened. Here you can get all Dutch snacks and of course also frikandellen. But if you prefer to make a frikandel bun yourself at home abroad, or if you do not have such a snack bar nearby, you can get all kinds of frikandellen at Dutch Shopper. Thanks to the special frozen shipping method, the frikandellen arrive fresh at your home.
