By planting the grapes at a very high altitude and cloning them well, Nicolas Catena got the best results with the malbec grape. The grapes needed the height to get nice ripe fruit flavors and smooth, soft tannins. After this discovery, many other Argentinian winemakers followed his example and the malbec is now the national grape.
