Since then, it has built a reputation as one of the most esteemed port houses. This reputation is based on the choice of the highest quality grapes, mainly coming from five estates, which belong to the best in the high-lying Douro valley: Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinta do Tua, Quinta das Lages (in the Rio Torto), and two others, Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas, privately owned by the Symington family. These estates benefit from an ideal combination of a hot and dry microclimate with unique slate soil that provides the best conditions for optimal ripening of the grapes.
